The laureates are chosen by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters based on
recommendations from an international committee, whose members are eminent
mathematicians suggested by the International Mathematical Union and the European
Mathematical Society. Only the chair of the committee is Norwegian. It is fair to say that the
A.bel Prize has established itself in a short time as one of the most prestigious prizes in
mathematics worldwide.

To stimulate the young
The task of stimulating an interest in mathematics among the young is not a problem that can
be solved once and for all. The Abel Board organizes many activities to that effect, the best
known being the annual
Niels Henrik Abel matematikkonkurranse
(The Norwegian
Mathematical Olympiad) for high school students, where the best participate in the Baltic
Way mathematical contest and the International Mathematical Olympiad. In addition, the
annual
Holmboe Prize
is

an eminent mathematics teacher. Furthermore, we have
started a team competition named

for

graders. Finally, we have scholarships
